A slow end of October; in terms of sharing more work here that I had originally planned. Trying to get more paintings done for portfolio updates, as well as certain personal deadlines I want to meet. Hopefully I’ll get more new work up here soon. 🙂 Until then, a little toned paper sketch from ITV’s Sanditon. Little bummed we didn’t get a proper Austen ending from Andrew Davies. 😆 Still, a huge fan of Davies and love every adaptation he’s done.

This drawing is probably the most fun I’ve had on an artwork this year. The initial research and reference stage had me a bit confused at first, as I hadn’t really thought about Odin’s eye until I looked at some old drawings and paintings online. I noticed a constant switch of direction of his missing right eye; my guess is mirroring had resulted in artists switching to the left side of his face. All in all a fun little project. (A side note, I had no idea how big ravens were. 😶)

A quick update on some new arrivals to my Etsy store, Embers & Stones. If you’re not familiar with my work, alongside creating art I also like to spend some of my time handcrafting fantasy-themed jewellery; mostly using wire-work techniques. I hope you find some time to check it out. 🙂
I decided to try something new this month. I’ve done quite a few earrings, necklaces & bracelets now, but with the holidays approaching (…well when I say approaching 😅) I thought it would be fun to experiment with some little decorations instead. So far there are 4 of these ornaments up in the shop; this being the ‘Heirlooms’ collection, but I might try some other variations as well.
This painting has been a bit puzzling for me. Although I’m not unsatisfied with the results, the composition and I suppose just the piece in general was a bit out of the usual for me. I admire artists whose pieces involve lots heavy background work; sceneries, forests, water, etc; but somehow I had moved away from it entirely since university days.
If you follow my work, you may have noticed that nowadays I prefer to work with a mostly a minimal backdrop (white usually). It’s just something I have come to like in my art. There are elements of this piece that I plan on using in the future, although I might not necessarily go this route again in terms of trying to create a full on classical painting. I still find painting nature, trees and such quite interesting; in terms of texture, foliage, etc, but I prefer to incorporate them in the composition without going too heavy on the background. What do you think? Do you think this type of piece wanders too far from my usual style? 😄

Although I mentioned I prefer not to go the route of a full classical painting, most of my favourite artists would fall under that genre. 😅 For this painting for example, I was inspired by the work of the French painter Bouguereau. I love how he paints children in particular, because for myself it’s an absolute nightmare. If you follow me on any of social media you’ll have seen me trying to figure out the alien proportions when it comes to kids. 😁

Auctioning on Ebay didn’t go as planned as I had to create a whole new account for the one painting and I feel it may have impacted how many people actually got to view it. So instead the painting is now available for purchase at the shop. The charity support will stay the same; I’ll still be donating 50% of the sale to the CFFF (just not using Ebay).

In between the painting I’ve been working on, I decided to take a little break – which basically meant binge-watching all 3 seasons of Stranger Things last weekend. I had some catching up to do. Naturally that resulted in some sketches; well one character in particular. I’m really looking forward to seeing the talented Dacre Montgomery in more roles in the future. As for Billy Hargrove, I knew I’d love the development of his character from the very beginning. And I’ll leave it at that for those who are still catching up. 😣
