2019 Updates

Hi everyone, it’s good to be back on the blog at last. I’m notoriously late to these things, but hope everyone’s having a great new year so far, and as always thank you all for the love and support. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Quick update to get through first; I have a bit of a studio clear-out going in the shop right now. I’m trying not to hold on to too many pieces in the new year. Head on to the updated shop section on the website or here, to find both new and older (as far as 2011) original artwork up for purchase.

Starting the new year with more of a fanart piece for the Twitter hashtag #ShadowhuntersPosterChallenge. This was being held by the creators of the Shadowhunters series on their social media, in promotion of the last season of the show. I thought it’d be fun to get creative with some artwork, rather than doing a photo-manipulated poster. The baddies are usual interests for me ๐Ÿ˜‰, so I decided to incorporate a portraiture of Luke Baines (entering the show this season) with aspects of Cassandra Clare’s original material for the character of Jonathan Morgenstern from the books. All in all, a fun little project.

TBT Art Edition, Inprnt Shop

This week I had some time to sit down and look at my work from over the years. I’ve gone as far back as primary school; more to my horror and hopefully more of an interest to all of you. ๐Ÿ˜ I think as artists we’re supposed to look at our past work to get a better understanding of the evolution of our skill and style, but sometimes going ‘back’ and I mean REALLY back, inevitably causes some cringing and need to hide sketchbooks…or maybe that’s just me. The most change you will probably see is around 2011 during my time in university, where all I did was abstract & modern art. There weren’t many options in terms of courses for me unfortunately, but looking at it positively it became clear to me very fast what I didn’t want to be doing.

Now for the really old pieces. Most of these are either in sketchbooks from elementary school (grades 4-5) or loose paper. The majority of them are anime/manga style as that was what I was really into at the time. Here are just a few of them.

I’ve had questions over the years of where to get started and how to go about improving your art, but I’ve never been completely comfortable giving advice on some things as I’m constantly learning and improving as well. However, one thing I can say now is that draw, draw some more, and keep drawing. If I stop producing art due to artist block or for any other reason (whether its sketches or finished paintings), I regret it immensely as I see the effects of it immediately in the new piece. One example that has stuck with me from a university presentation is to look at children’s drawings, and then asking an adult with no background knowledge in fine art to do the same. You will see that for the most part the two will be very similar. Just like anything else, that skill remains stagnant until we acquire the knowledge to improve our techniques which also includes years of practice. ๐Ÿ™‚

Now that you’ve gotten a glimpse at where I come from in terms of my art, hopefully this will motivate all of you who are either beginning their art careers or picking it up as a hobby.

*On a side note, I’ve decided to open a Inprnt Shop for art prints along with my Society6 one. I’m curious as to which people prefer using, but for now I have them both up and running.

Family Fan Day – Murdoch, Caught, Anne

10.03.2018_ShaimaIslam

Yesterday was Family Fan Day in Toronto, and I was lucky enough to meet some of the stars from various shows like Murdoch Mysteries, Caught, and Anne. The cast were so incredibly nice, to the extent of indulging me in signing my work. I’m curious to know how many of you were also able to drop by at the Sony Centre yesterday?

If you’re on Twitter you can view more of the event using the #FamilyFanDay as well more of my unintentional awkwardness here @Shaima. ๐Ÿ™‚

When the photographer doesn’t know if your camera is working or not…Time for some new tech upgrades I think, lol.

Weekend Drama

It’s getting quite chilly in Toronto isn’t it?…or I might be the only one who feels like a lizard right now. :S Either way, nothing is better than settling in with some BBC dramas on the weekend. I have some catching up to do with a few older series, but after a long wait for its release, ended up watching The Cuckoo’s Calling (Cormoran Strike) this past week in one go; it was too good to stop after one. Realizing however that as with every show, getting ‘withdrawals’ while having to wait per week for a new episode is no fun. ๐Ÿ˜€ I was also sketching away while watching episode 3 again…
